Tinnitus & Indian Head Massage

My experience and many reports by Tinnitus sufferers show that Indian Head Massage alleviates tinnitus irritation for the majority of people. Try it gently at first and work up to more pressure slowly when massaging.

Hi, welcome to my Tinnitus blog. Indian massage started for me when I was very young approximately – 2 years old. My mother regularly massaged my head and body, sometimes very vigorously, several times a year. My mother is from India and she retained many traditional methods of relaxation, exercise, and cooking of course. Many of her traditions have healing effects and make the body and mind feel much better.

Here is what I can remember and what helps me today…

Indian Head Massage

Indian head massage- rub through the hair

My mother used to use warm almond oil to rub my head starting at the top and working her away down to the sides of my head and to the top of my forehead.
I would sit it on the floor me and she would be on a seat behind me to make it comfortable for me and her.
The gentle rubbing motion up and down and circular from time to time would progressively become harder and with more pressure. Sometimes I felt it was even slightly hurting but it felt fantastic afterward.
Years later, I use this method on myself and my family when we want to relieve stress and pain.
I realized later in life that it also relieves my tinnitus considerably.

How to use Indian head massage for tinnitus…

Almond oil – pronounced “ammond” apparently!

Take some almond oil and put it into a small ball. Heat the almond oil in a microwave on a low setting. Do it about 10 seconds at a time. Test it with your finger to make sure it’s not too warm. Now with your hand, put the tips of your fingers into the oil and start rubbing the head gently on the top in a circular motion.
Moving onto the palm of your hand if you want more pressure continue the circular motion from the top of the head to the sides of the head and then to the back and to just above the forehead.
You may want to use an up-and-down motion sometimes it can be quite a vigorous motion if there is no discomfort or other underlying medical conditions.

You can also do this on your own head as well, massaging in a very similar way but you can use two hands. I think you’ll find if you massage round about the ears gently and on the earlobes, you will reduce the effects and discomfort of the tinnitus noises.

Almond oil benefits

If you want to treat your child to a gentle massage, almond oil is excellent. Some parents choose to mix almond oil with some chamomile oil but it is quite safe to use all on its own. Almond oil is known to possess anti-inflammatory properties and it hydrates and refreshes the skin without clogging your pores. For these reasons, almond oil has proven beneficial for treating skin problems like itching, inflammation, soreness, and even other conditions like eczema and dermatitis. Use almond oil as your base oil and add smaller quantities of additional oils for even more benefits without creating a massage oil that will cost too much.

The Indian neck massage for tinnitus relief.

Use both hands to massage your neck.

If you think about the back of your neck and how it often feels stiff and hard, this is often a sign of too much stress.

So starting gently with a little bit of warm almond oil on both your hands -press the tips of your fingers onto the back of your neck gently massaging up and down and pressing lightly to relieve the pressure of the stress.

Personally I squeeze quite strongly and it even slightly hurts but I feel much better afterward.

If you are doing it to somebody else get them to sit between your knees on the floor or on a chair in front of you you and start on the neck and shoulders, gently at first and then with quite firm pressure use the warm almond oil to make it easy to massage and also the smell of it is wonderful!

Body massage to relieve pain & stress

Body massage is so relaxing.

Indian massage is especially good for young children in my opinion because it was very good for me. Yes, I did moan and groan a bit when my mum said “come over here son for some comfort!”
There is no reason that Indian massage cannot be used on older folk as well.

But with the warm almond oil, she would start on the head but move on to the shoulders and arms, the back would be pressed gently but especially the leg muscles and the feet and the calves would be massaged up and down and in a circular motion.

I’m sure that this would also be helpful for you but you do have to be careful if you have underlying medical conditions. Once the almond oil has been rubbed gently with whole-body, you can also massage deeper and harder on the back muscles, leg muscles, and arm muscles.

This relaxation will reduce stress and in turn undoubtedly or hopefully reduce your tinnitus.

What is Indian massage?

Indian head massage, also known as Champissage, is a treatment that focuses on massaging acupressure points along the head, neck, and shoulders, often using circular massage strokes to improve hair and scalp condition. It originates from an Indian alternative medicine system called Ayurveda (translated as the ‘science of life’), whereby it is believed that the mind and body are intricately connected and thus can influence one another.

Ayurvedic massage is a key part of Ayurvedic therapy. Just as a machine needs to be oiled, the body loves to have its largest organ, the skin, soothed, which is why oils are commonly used in Ayurvedic massage. Whether the Ayurvedic massage forms part of a more comprehensive Ayurveda program or is merely undertaken for the sheer pleasure of a deeply relaxing, indulgent body massage; Ayurvedic massage is one of Ancient India’s best-kept secrets.

Through this theory, we can understand that Indian head massage can not only reduce headaches and improve physical well-being, but it can also improve mental, physical, and emotional wellness too.
Indian head massage is an ancient therapeutic practice that has been used in India for over 5000 years apparently, and requires no oils or equipment, making it a very accessible treatment, perfect for newcomers to massage. It is usually done while seated and through light clothing.
I personally find it much more effective with warm oil.
Indian head massage can be used to increase mental clarity and rejuvenate the person receiving the massage. Although treatments include massage of the back, arms, shoulders, and neck, head massage and face massage make up the main parts of this amazing treatment.

No Time?

If you don’t have time for Indian Head Massage, don’t fret. It can be done in your daily routine. 🙂

When in the shower or bath and you are shampooing your hair, massage your scalp vigorously with the tips of your fingers. Press hard in a circular motion, moving from the top of the head down to the back of the neck. Feel the stress flow away with this method. Reducing stress reduces Tinnitus. Repeat this motion several times, moving onto the shoulders and upper arms.
The massage releases toxins from tensed and knotted areas of the body.

Without oil but with a partner’s help.

One can sit fully clothed, in any chair to receive their treatment.
